Fashion Week One on One
Our own Kate Flynn recently sat down with the Habitude’s Blog team and dished on her incredible NYC Fashion Week experience!
How did you end up working at fashion week & what was your inspiration?
I got the opportunity to do fashion week by attending a Runway Styling class at the Aveda Advanced Academy in New York. After completing the two day class, it certified me to come back three weeks later to work at NY Fashion Week.
How was the environment backstage?
The best way to describe the environment backstage was organized chaos. There are a million things going on around you and so much creative energy and excitement. There is an overwhelming focus that takes over as soon as the first model sits in your chair.
What were your favorite shows you worked?
I really enjoyed working on the Nautica show, it was my first show at Lincoln Center so it was all very surreal and working with attractive male models is always a plus. The Leighanne Marshall show was probably my favorite style because it was the kind of hair I love doing; textured, feminine with an edge.
What most do you love about New York?
I love that New York is a melting pot of different cultures and it is one of the most inspiring places to visit. Not to mention, it’s the best place for food and shopping.
What was the most memorable moment backstage?
The most memorable moment backstage for me was during the AAU show at Lincoln Center. It was the only time I really felt the stress overcome the team. There were 15 models unaccounted for and we only had 30 minutes until show time. It was time for us to stop thinking and just do the best hair we could. We made it happen with five minutes to spare.
How can guests at home see some of your work or shows from Fashion Week?
I’m a fan of social networking so I try to post my work on Facebook and Instagram. A great way to see the shows from Fashion Week is through YouTube or following Mercedes Benz Fashion Week on your favorite social networking site.
How has Habitude helped you get to Fashion Week?
Habitude helped me get to Fashion Week by setting up a system that would help me accumulate money in my education fund so that I could have the opportunity to take the Runway Styling class. Also, my amazing co-workers have been an inspiration for me to push myself creatively and take risks.
What’s next for you?
I would love to do the Advanced Runway Styling class and do fashion week again next February. I see myself getting more involved with freelance opportunities in the area. I hope to continue advancing my knowledge not only within the editorial world but in the world of cutting and coloring.
